Transcript:

I first went to the Hatt Clinic for manual therapy during the final year of my PhD. Before the pandemic, I cycled into work every day where I was spent a lot of time on my feet in the lab and also played a lot of sports too so I was never sat down for very long to be honest.

About halfway through the first lock-down, I started to experience loads of back pain. This wasn’t something I expected at my age but I think it was a combination of poor office furniture, lack of movement, and the added stress of being in the final year of a PhD and also trying to find my first job during the pandemic.

In hindsight, I wish I’d booked in for manual therapy much sooner as it got to a point where I was actually struggling to sleep at night because I was so uncomfortable. The lack of sleep then started to impact my mood during the day and also made me less productive at work which made me even more stressed, so it started to become a bit of a vicious cycle.

I’d heard about Hatt’s through a friend as they’d been treated by the team for years for a variety of different ailments and I’m really glad I took their recommendation.

I didn’t quite realise how much I needed the team at Hatts until after my first appointment. I actually felt so much better after just one session and slept better than I had in months which was such a relief. It became clear that I’d left it way too late to see a manual therapist as the tension in my muscles was pretty deep at this point. After my first session, I booked in for another four weekly sessions to get on top of the issue and now I’m visiting every 4 to 6 weeks on average I’d say.

I’ve seen most of the manual therapy team at Hatt’s now and I genuinely can’t recommend them enough. Their sessions are very different from what I’d experienced before in a spa treatment massage for example. They really listen to you and focus on what your body needs most. They use loads of different techniques to relieve muscle tension and reduce any pain that you’re experiencing. I also got given some exercises to do at home which helped me keep on top of the progress thatwe’d made in our sessions which was really very helpful.

I live in Bristol so I travel an hour each way to have treatment with Hatt’s but it’s so worth it! They have Saturday and evening appointments which work really well with my routine and I honestly don’t think I’d go anywhere else now.

Athlete’s Foot

I’m going to answer a question about Athlete’s Foot, what is it and how can it be treated?

So athlete’s foot is a type of fungal skin infection caused by a fungus called a dermatophyte. This can present in a number of ways and most commonly it is itchy, dry, red, and scaly. Now it can be difficult to tell this apart from normal, regular dry skin, so I’d recommend seeing a podiatrist to confirm.

Treatment for this is very simple. Using a cream, such as Lamisil can help get rid of the fungal skin infection. There are simple things you can do at home as well, which can help eradicate the infection such as changing your shoes and socks daily and ensuring you dry thoroughly in between the toes.

What progress have you made over the past 3 months

 

At the time of my last report, I was really hopeful that I might be able to get to

the Premier division in that season, despite the injury that Hatt’s helped me recover from.  The good news is that I achieved the results I needed and got promoted to Prem with a race to spare- becoming the youngest paddler in the West Country to reach the Premier Division, and the first Premier Division Paddler that Frome Canoe Club has ever had.

Since the end of the season I have been working hard in winter training and the coaches are very impressed with my progress.  On the water, I have been working on my technique and speed, i.e. how to paddle faster, but reduce the risk of penalties from touches or missing gates through getting my lines wrong.

What competitions have you taken part in over the past 3 months?

The final 3 competitions of the season were just after my last report.  These resulted in my promotion in getting a 4th and 1st place at Llandysul, and taking part in my first Premier Division race where I was pretty proud of myself in putting in a respectable performance.

I was really pleased to have achieved my goal for the season, despite such a troublesome injury.

What competitions does Jacob have lined up over the next 3 months?

The first competitions of the new season are in February and March.  In February, I will start my campaign to try and improve my ranking in Canoe (C1), with the possibility that I might be able to achieve getting into Prem in Canoe as well.  Then the season for Kayak starts in March with the selection races for the GB Under-18 team.  I am not expected to get onto the team this year as I am only 15, but this is very much seen as the year that I should gain experience and get ready to really push in the next 2 years.

There are also races in Scotland at Easter, where I will be trying to improve my Premiership ranking.  Overall there are only 11 Prem races through the season, but I also have some Division 1 Canoe races, and we are starting to look at the International races where I will compete in the European Canoe Association Junior Slalom Cup.

How are you getting on in the GB pathway?

I am continuing to be a well regarded member of the squad, and my coaches are very pleased with me.  Now that I am in Prem, I get extra coaching from British Canoeing in the run up to selection.

At my end of season interview, I have been tasked with three key goals:

1. Gaining weight and strength through my off the water training.

2. Continuing to develop my technique ready for the 2020 season.

3. Through the season races, improving my Junior 16 ranking from 8thin the UK (6th in England) to 4th in the English ranking.

My coaches have been particularly full of praise with regards to my mental preparation, progress and attitude to my training.  In November, I was voted British Canoeing’s Athlete of the Month.

How has attending the clinic helped with your progress?

The work with the Clinic has been great for me.  To start with the injury I had last year, I was regularly doing well before the injury, finishing just outside the top 10 in my races.  After the injury and my recovery, I achieved promotion after just 4 races, in which I came 2nd, 4th, 4th and 1st respectively.  I am absolutely sure that this shows I came back stronger for the recovery both physically and mentally, and more determined that ever!

I am sure I could not have achieved this without the care and attention shown by the Hatt’s team in my recovery and I am very grateful, as I know are my parents!

I also do not believe that I would be as strong as I am or as resilient without the work that Garrath and I put in between us.

I am also so much more aware of my posture, my body and how to keep myself healthy and strong.

During my end of season interview, I discussed the work I do with Hatt’s with my Coaches.  They were impressed at the partnership between us, and they all agreed that although other squad members have been able to secure sponsors for new boats, kit or race costs, the relationship we have with Hatt’s is far more valuable than any of this.

Hatt’s have helped me so much physically, but have also helped me to continue to believe in myself.  One of the things that is really important, although they are hard to remember to do, are the social media posts that Steph encourages me to do.  They help keep me focused on my goal and are a good reminder of where I have come from and where I am most certainly going! Thank you Hatt’s.

Here’s a review of how Jacob’s been getting on so far:

 

What progress have you made over the past 3 months?

I’ve continued to work on my fitness and strength through the summer and felt in a really good place when I returned to racing last week after a gap in races for a couple of months.  I raced at Nottingham where I got a really good result in both kayak and canoe.

I attending a British Canoeing training camp on the river Rhone over the summer which was really valuable for learning and reinforcing whitewater skills.  In the race simulation on the last day I ended up about 4% faster than the best of the rest, which my coaches put down to my natural technique and skill, but also my core strength, which has been really helped by the work with Gareth.

I’ve also taken some private 1-1 coaching up at HPP in Nottingham over a few weekends with Zak Allin, one of the best paddlers in the UK and recently appointed to the British Canoeing staff.  He has really helped me go back-to-basics with my technique, but was very impressed with my strength and my natural ability.  It was really good to hear this from an independent view.

 

What competitions have you taken part in over the past 3 months?

The summer has been an off-season for racing, but I have still trained hard.  At the training camp in France I was fastest on the water by a long way, although penalties cost me a little.  My coaches continually tell me though that they would far rather find someone who can be fast to work on technique with, as it’s very hard to try and make a paddler faster even if they have good technique.

I thought I was back from my injury in good form, and this has been borne out by my recent results- I equaled my Division 1 PB with another 6th at Nottingham, and have competed in a couple of “paddle-ups” where I get to race with the Premier Division, on the basis of my national ranking.  

These races are all about experience rather than results as I’m racing against people with 10 years more experienced than me, but I still put in respectable results, finishing with some points.  Last weekend I qualified for a place in the British Open at the Olympic Course, racing against the best British and European paddlers, and although I didn’t qualify through to the semi’s, I put in a really good performance and my British Canoeing coaches were very pleased with my paddling.

 

What competitions does Jacob have lined up over the next 3 months?

The next few weeks are really important to me.  We are at the end of the season, and although my injury earlier in the year has cost me because I missed some valuable races, the work with Hatt’s helped me come back so strong that I have still kept my hopes of promotion to the Premier division alive.  

I am inside the top 10 of Division 1 and if I can get  a top 4 finish in 2 of the next 3 races, I should get promoted.  This will be hard, but it’s not out of the question.  I have a 2-race weekend at Llandysul in mid-Wales this weekend, and then a Prem “paddle-up” followed by the final Division 1 race at Tees in Newcastle the weekend after.  And then it’s winter training until competition begins again in March!

 

How are you getting on in the GB pathway?

My coaches are still pleased with my progress, and particularly my strength and speed.  My speed works against me a little because it means I sometimes pick up extra penalties and I’ve been working hard on that.

I have my annual interview and appraisal with BC in the next few weeks, and I think this should be very positive.  Without my injury, I am pretty confident that I would be in the Premier division by now, and though this is tough to take, my coaches have told me that this will be taken into account.  I continue to work hard, and next season’s goal is to get onto the English National Talent Squad (ENTS) and to try out for junior GB selection.

 

How has attending the clinic helped with your progress?

I’m generally considered as the strongest and fastest of my age on the squad.  That stands me in really good stead for my racing, but the work that I’ve done with Gareth has made me more aware of technique, and of how my body is working.  To be honest, I think this is quite unusual for my age as I’m now very aware of my body and what it needs.  I now stretch much more than I used to and I think I’m much less likely to get injured than I was.  I just feel like a better athlete.

We’ve mostly focused on strength and conditioning recently but the combination of physio, massage and S&C when I was recovering was awesome and so well put together that I think this has made me come back so much better.

I’m really grateful to everyone at Hatt’s.  All of you were such a great team when I hurt myself, and worked together to get me back to racing.  I still believe in myself and even if I don’t get to the Premier division this year, I will do it early next year, which will still be a great achievement for someone my age.

I’m also working hard on my social media presence since meeting with Steph and maintain a separate “professional” Insta account, and send vlogs to Steph regularly.  I’ve also added Hatt’s to my entry data, so my race postings and results are listed “ Frome Canoe Clue / Hatt Associates”.  One of my posts was picked up and reposted by @CanoeSlalomInternational which was great for my profile, and had the #Hattclinic.

I am really excited about the next year.  It’s going to be hard racing in the highest UK division as a 15 year-old, but I’m up for it and I think I can deliver results.  My dream of racing for Great Britain is still very real.

What progress have you made over the past 3 months?

The last 3 months have been difficult for me as I injured my back three months ago. I have had to take nearly two months out of racing, some of which could have

been my best results.

The team at Hatts have really helped me get back to strength. Since coming back into racing, I have had two of my best results so far (see below) and I feel more confident that I can get the good results. I have progressed from 23rd in the division to 6th, and even though I’ve missed some races I still have a shot at getting to Premier Division this year. My coaches at British Canoeing are very pleased with how I have managed my recovery. I think I have come back stronger, and I am really up for it!

 

What competitions have you taken part in over the past 3 months?

The last 3 months have been hard. I raced at Grandtully in the Scottish Highlands where I got some great results, which started my season well in both Canoe and Kayak. Then I got injured, and had to take some time off for recovery, with the help of the Hatt’s team.

I raced at Chapel Falls (North Wales) but I came back too soon, and had a poor result on day one and had to pull out in day two because of the pain. That was a really low point.

Since then I raced in North Yorkshire where I came 2nd, and then this weekend racing at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham I came 6th, which has pushed me way up the rankings. On day two, I judged at the Pan-Celtic races and raced in Officials against the Russian Senior team and actually beat two of them!

 

What competitions does Jacob have lined up over the next 3 months?

I don’t have any races for the next 6 weeks because of a summer break and we are missing a couple of weekends due to a long-standing family holiday in Canada. After that though, I have week-long BC training camp in France, and have arranged a couple of 1-1 coaching sessions before then with an U23 GB Paddler in Nottingham to keep me in shape.

After that though, I have a Division 1 race in Nottingham (HPP), a paddle up in a Premier race at HPP, a double race weekend at the Tryweryn (Premier paddle-up in North Wales) and I am looking very likely to get an entry to the British Open at the Olympic course. I will also train and practice with Frome Canoe Club.

 

How are you getting on in the GB pathway?

My coaches are very pleased with my progress and my recovery. They think I have a very good chance of promotion to the Premier Division, and have asked me to work towards Junior Selection for the GB team next year. This is not with expectation of getting selected but they want me to be ready and used to the pressure of selection for coming years.

 

How has attending the clinic helped with your progress?

The clinic have been invaluable to me since getting injured. Without Hatt’s input I would not have recovered so well and would not be as strong as I am now. I would have missed more races.
I feel I am more aware of my body, mainly my posture and how I feel when something isn’t right. I am looking after my body more, training better and have noticed improvement in my posture and my general physique. My coaches have also noticed this. I am much more aware of my exercise technique.

I am really grateful to the team at Hatt’s for the help they have given me, not just in helping me to get over my injury, but also in improving my training and making me stronger, and also to Steph for all the help she has given me in being more aware of my social media profile.

England Hockey Gets Back To Sport Post Injury

Ian Philips, an England Masters Hockey player, was suffering from an ankle injury and thought his hockey days were over, until he came to Hatt’s. With Ian’s determination and the help of the Hatt Clinic team, he was back to Hockey within no time. Here is an insight into Ian’s journey so far:

 

Tell us about your injury:

In May 2017, I had a bad injury to the ankle and tore 3 ligaments. This was the second time I had experienced this injury to the same ankle.
I play hockey and balance is very important for me, however, having torn ligaments in my ankle, my balance had all gone. Before my first session with Guy, I thought I was done, my ankle was so swollen and I couldn’t walk on it for about 2 weeks. I really felt as though I had no hope playing at the European Masters Championships in Holland, which were due to start in August. However, Guy had faith!

 

What’s been your biggest challenge in dealing with your injury?

Motivation has been my biggest challenge with my injury. When you play sport at a certain level and you get injured, it’s very easy to get really down about it, as there are a lot of things you miss out on: the competition, the camaraderie, being away and putting on a show – so if your injured, it can be easy to get morose about it and fed up. Therefore, motivation is key and that’s why the likes of Guy, in particular, really helps as he is very upbeat and positive, even though I was thinking to myself ‘you fibber – you’re just telling me it’s not going to come back’ – but the proof was in the pudding that it did work.

 

Did you find your treatment with Hatt’s effective?

Yes! After having part of my treatment with Hatt’s, I started to believe that I could play in a tournament 3 months later, which originally I was told I’d never have a chance in. The journey was really good and I think it’s that linking up of different facets that helped because I’d played sport at a reasonable level for a long time and had injuries in the past, then I’d go to a physio and they’d give me a hand written sheet of some exercises to do. So, when I was going to work, seeing my family etc, I’d then go to the gym and think ‘what am I supposed to be doing? I can’t remember’.

So for me, the linking with rehab was brilliant as the instructors had already spoken to Guy and sorted out what I needed to do. Each time I turn up, I do all of the exercises that are designed around strengthening my ankle. The instructors are very good at pointing out if I’m not working hard enough or doing the right thing. The programme is very cohesive and is designed so you have identification of injury, treatment of injury, rehab of injury then strength and conditioning to ensure you don’t get hurt again. This, I feel, is just the right way to approach an injury.

I couldn’t have made this progress by myself or without the support of the Rehab Instructors Danny and Hannah. I find that personal trainers tend to be more focused on lifting heavy weights – they don’t work specifically to your injury, but spending time with Danny and Hannah at the Hatt’s rehab gym meant that I managed to play in a big tournament and played 8 games in 10 days (admittedly a little sore afterwards) but I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the Hatt team.

The whole journey has been really impactful, from the quick identification of injury, the treatment of the injury and no problem getting appointments. I found that the clinicians know their stuff and know how to treat people. The treatment is really effective, the guidance you get during treatment is really effective and the rehab following that is just an extension of the treatment – it’s the whole process that works. My journey with Hatt’s has definitely exceeded my expectations.

 

What’s next for you?

I have a big tournament in July 2018, so I’ll be starting Strength & Conditioning at Hatt’s in addition to my normal training with the sole objective of getting to Barcelona in July in absolutely top condition.
I am a genuine believer that if you get your fitness levels right, you mitigate injuries – that doesn’t just mean going to the gym and doing lots of exercises that really don’t work for you – you’ve got to do stuff that’s tailored to you.

Hitting the target with Devizes Bowmen archery club

It was a grand evening with the Devizes Bowmen archery club on 16th September 2015. The team at James Hatt & Associates welcomed 16 of the club’s members for an evening of presentations and practical exercises, with food and entertainment thrown in for good measure.


Club Treasurer, Neil Lockhart, got in touch with us earlier this summer – requesting if we could host a talk about the impact archery has on specific muscle groups, how to avoid unnecessary injury, and what to do if injury does occur.

This was the perfect opportunity for our Clinical Lead, Guy Kingston and our Rehab Therapist, Ryan Stewart to get their teeth into learning about a new sport and how the specific movements positions and forces involved in archery affects the body.

On the day, club members enthusiastically got involved in the presentation – asking questions, discussing issues, and picking up Guy on his archery terminology!

Ryan too got everybody involved with practising warm-up exercises (at which point some members got carried away with dance-moves), and stretches to warm and loosen those muscles before hitting the targets hard.

Neil Lockhart sums up the evening well – “Guy and his team hit the target with this session providing our members with practical information and specific warm up exercises, which given that our members’ ages range from 11 years to over 80 years old, was a real challenge. Archery is a physically and mentally demanding sport, and I can already see us having a team warm up before shooting on a Saturday morning.”

“I am sure that a few of our members will be seeking further advice from Guy’s team in the near future. It was surprising how many people had some minor injury that never got mentioned until signing up for this session. Although one member’s expectations on reversing the aging process was not met, all other expectations were exceeded!”

How a Gait Analysis helped Paul get back on his bike

Read about Paul’s experience with a Gait Analysis, and how it helped him get back to doing what he loves best – cycling.

 

My right foot was giving me a lot of discomforts particularly when I went for a ride on my bike. It reached the stage where after only 20 minutes of cycling the area behind my smallest toe was really bothering me. I tried different shoes and thicker socks but it made no difference. As cycling is my main hobby and the way I keep some level of fitness I knew I needed some professional help.

 

By good chance, I was put in touch with Benn at Hatt Clinic. I went for a consultation which resulted in him recommending I have an injection to calm the inflamed area on my foot. Plus he described the custom insole package that Hatt Clinic provides. It’s fair to say that even though I wasn’t totally sure it would work for me I was becoming so concerned I would have to reduce my cycling I gave the go-ahead there and then.

 

Benn took a cast of the soles of my feet and I arranged to come back in three weeks’ time.

 

I returned with two pairs of my cycling shoes as planned and Benn inserted my new shiny insoles into the shoes. They were a good fit in both pairs. Benn explained he had designed the insoles to reduce the pressure behind my smallest toe on both of my feet which seemed a good idea to me. Plus the insoles had a fair amount of carbon fiber which is always good news from a cyclist’s point of view.

 

I couldn’t wait to get home and go for a ride. Benn had suggested I start with a gentle ride of up to 30 minutes to start with. Naturally, I ignored this sensible advice and decided to go for the Full Monty. I pedaled away from home and went in search of the nearest hill which I blasted up as fast as I possibly could. And then I found another and yet more. In the end, I was riding for just over two hours. The insoles felt great. In fact, I had forgotten all about my feet and was just enjoying the fresh air and thrill of riding. And riding pain-free.

 

I’ve now ridden around 700 hundred miles in my new insoles and they have been just superb. I’ve also had a follow-up visit with Benn which was all part of the course of treatment that comes with the plan. Thanks Benn!”
