What is the difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist?
In practice, there is very little difference.
Podiatrist is now the more commonly used and protected professional title, but both chiropodists and podiatrists are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of foot and lower limb conditions.

When should I see a podiatrist/chiropodist?
You don’t need to wait until foot problems become severe.
People often see a podiatrist for issues such as painful or thickened nails, corns, callus, ingrowing toenails, foot pain, skin problems, or changes in how their feet feel or function. If something doesn’t feel right, uncomfortable, or manageable anymore, it’s usually a good time to get it checked.
How often should I see a podiatrist/chiropodist?
For many people, a routine appointment every 6–8 weeks works well.
However, this depends on what you’re coming in for. Some foot and nail conditions benefit from more regular care, while others only need occasional appointments.
Your podiatrist or chiropodist will advise what’s right for your feet and your needs.
What does a podiatrist do on a first visit?
Your first appointment will start with a conversation about your feet, any symptoms you’re experiencing, and how they’re affecting you day to day.
Your podiatrist will then assess your feet and carry out appropriate treatment during the same visit. You’ll also receive clear advice on ongoing care and whether any follow-up is recommended.
Can a podiatrist remove a toenail?
Yes.
Podiatrists are trained to carry out nail procedures, including partial or full toenail removal, where clinically appropriate. This will always be discussed with you in advance so you understand what’s involved and feel comfortable with the plan.
Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist?
No referral is needed.
